The 2010 ASP World Tour Schedule

22 12 2009

A short press release arrived in my email inbox yesterday evening announcing the “historic” changes to the 2010 ASP World Tour schedule. I can’t recall the last time the ASP sent out a press release that didn’t include the word “historic” in it. Everything the ASP does is historic these days. It’s like Roosevelt’s speech when the Japanese Empire bombed Pearl Harbor.

“Today—ay-ay will be a date which will live in infamy as we announce sweeping changes to the already Dreamy Dream Tour schedule.”

But who can blame them? This stuff is exciting and the 2010 season doesn’t kick off for two months.

Frankly, there are not a lot of changes. A few tweaks here. A few tweaks there. Teahupoo has been moved up by a few months. They dropped fickle Munduka for Portugal. And they pushed back the start date of the Teahupoo event to capitalize on swell opportunity. Billabong has dropped an event and Rip Curl has added one more event. But I was thoroughly disappointed they did not formally announce the venue for the Rip Curl Pro Search. My money is on Huntington.

If it isn’t broke why fix it. Right? To be fair, Mother Nature was not kind to the WCT in 2009. Perhaps that’s what so great about surfing—the uncertainty. If the waves are as bad in 2010 as they were in ’09 then THAT would be “historic.”

The 2010 ASP World Tour schedule is as follows:

Quiksilver Pro Gold Coast, February 27 – March 10, 2010
Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach, March 30 – April 10, 2010
Hang Loose Santa Catarina Pro, April 21 – April 30, 2010
Billabong Pro Jeffreys Bay, July 15 – 25, 2010
Billabong Pro Teahupoo, August 23 – September 3, 2010
Hurley Pro Trestles, September 12 – 21, 2010
Quiksilver Pro France, September 25 – October 5, 2010
Rip Curl Pro Portugal, October 7 – 18, 2010
Rip Curl Pro Search, October 30 – November 10, 2010
Billabong Pipe Masters, December 8 – 20, 2010

Now let’s take a trip down memory lane and compare the tour today to 1990.

O’Neill Pepsi Cold Water Classic – Santa Cruz, USA
Bundaberg Rum Surf Masters – Burleigh Heads, Australia
Rip Curl Coca-Cola Surfing Classic – Bells Beach, Australia
Coca Cola Bottlers Surf Classic – Narrabeen Beach, Australia
Gunston 500 – Durban, South Africa
Life’s a Beach Surf Klassik – Oceanside Pier, USA
OP Pro – Huntington Beach, USA
Quiksilver Lacanau Pro – Lacanau, France
Rip Curl Pro Landes – Hossegor, France
Arena Surfmasters – Biarritz, France
Pukas Pro – Zarautz, Spain
Seland Pro – Sopelana, Spain
Buondi Pro – Ericeira, Portugal
Marui Pro – Chiba, Japan
Alternativa Surf International – Rio De Janeiro, Brazil
Hang Loose Pro – Guaruja, Brazil
The Drug Offensive Masters – Margaret River, Australia
BHP Steel International – Newcastle Beach, Australia
Hard Rock Cafe World Cup of Surfing – Haleiwa, Hawaii
Marui Pipeline Masters – Pipeline, Hawaii
Billabong Pro – North Shore, Hawaii

Now that wasn’t exactly a dream schedule…six events in Europe and crappy beachbreaks galore. Another thing you will notice is the amount of corporate event sponsors like the Hard Rock Cafe, BHP Steel, Coca Cola and Pepsi. It was a far cry from today’s tour which is essentially controlled by three major surf brands.

Nevertheless, Tom Curren dominated the 1990 season by winning the first three events and more than a third of the 21 events.

The Early Bagel catches the, uh, the… well… I’M FIRST!

Real shame the lack of any Klassic-with-a-K events this year. Lots of hot chikz at those events. And mullets.

I gave Dave Mailman a template for the tour and he forwarded it to Brody with a very simple premise. Devise a schedule as you would a surf trip.

I never expected them to acquiesce to my logic, but wasting May, June and half of July in the southern hemi is ridiculous. JBay is the lone “in season” venue while the rest of the so hemi winter is squandered until late August and the entire tour is crammed into a very inconsistent Northern Hemi early fall ( has anyone been paying attention to the last few years lack of swell?).

Fiji is absent again, a major loss and don’t plan a Mentawaii trip this spring, the pro’s have nothing to do and a full pumping season to camp in Indo.

After Bells, will we even care by the time JBay pops up? Nothing like a 3 month break to capitalize on momentum.

Nature is a funny component though and you never know, but wasting the best season for surf sure reads like a major risk. Failure is nothing new to the ASP, may Huey show mercy on the fools that created this schedule.

As for the past schedule, I sure miss Sydney, Margarets, Steamers and Durban… good contests. The Coke deserved the adjective “historic”, so many good times Narrabeen provided. Manly, not so much.

The Dream Tour is still just a fantasy… living in infamy

@ Mike…. well said and I don’t buy the lack of good waves as bad luck… tour is doing nothing to help themselves.

Until pro surfing can get our version of the Maloof brothers to do what they did for skateboarding, we will just have to sit back and take what they give us.

Predictions for 2010:

Same top 5 with Kelly moving in and Adriano moving out.

Same top 10 with Jordy moving up a couple slots and one of the Hobgoods or B-Mar dropping a couple slots.

Some of the new crew should have staying power but that’s about it…. under the current format when the new guys surf a early round heat v. T Knox or T Whitaker
in a right point or one of the Hobgoods in Tahiti or beachbreaks… they usually don’t have consistent success.

Basically, nothing to get too excited about other than maybe some blog commentary… hope Nug hangs in there.

@ Mark… you want me to show you where to surf in Diego.

Mick Fanning won the championship fair and square. In fact, it’s probably one of the best sporting come from behind championships of all time. Think about it. Oh, Joel has it sewn up less than halfway through the season..ASP failure…but like C. Berman says…”that’s why they play the game.” Plus the guy truly rips, he really does. He hangs with the best of them in good waves_they aren’t giving that shit away. So who can step up in this venue? It’ll be interesting to see. …. bet it won’t be Dane….stay tuned.

@ Elwood

No thanks but I will let you buy me a couple of beers and a game of pool at The West End.

22 12 2009
trauzersnake

@Mark

How about the Golden Tee?? they let you smoke cigs inside until the cops come.

22 12 2009
Mike

Be careful Elwood, a couple of beers means the entire Keg to Mark… fair warning. The last thing you want is to fund a large drunk with a weapon (pool stick) and a “christian” temper.

@Trauzer… spot on, Fanning took momentum and won despite the hazing he receives on this blog. Parko got eliminated by a surfer who could never qualify for the tour title race he spoiled, a fundamental flaw of a “sport” so ill defined.

Maybe Pipe should be a “playoff”… only invite those with a mathematical shot with the rest of the contest a specialty event. Then you can poison the well with wildcards and industry pushes and no one should care.

22 12 2009
Mark

@ Trauzersnake

Love the Golden Tee in Carlsbad but I prefer the surf and pubs of the Hallowed ground between _ _ _____ and __ _____ ____. Especially that spot right in the middle ———. Where you can hammer bud lights in the lot while analyzing your buddies crashing into the shorebreak on the lefts.

22 12 2009
Mark

I actually meant ” that spot in the middle _________.”

22 12 2009
Mike

Hey Mark, know of any secret spots in Bali? How bout a map?

22 12 2009
Elwood

@ Mark…. Love the West End… last time I was there was about 20 years ago… my buddy who was bout 20 at the time pulled some 45 year old skank out there… way before Cougar hunting was in.

@ Trauzer… like u better with the Cum commentary… but as far as Mick goes you are so right and so wrong at the same time… Given the structure of the ASP he is a worthy champion… fast, technical, consistent, adapts to all conditions, surf light footed, surf heavy footed.. etc., etc. But put Mick in one of the sessions in Modern Collective and where does he stand???

22 12 2009
Jamon Bagel

Mick is a product of the system. If he were a food he’d be cheese spray. He surfs with no creativity, which is why he’s stultifying to watch. Great competitor, good athlete, decent guy.

Greatness? Not even a little bit.

23 12 2009
Mark

@ Elwood

Nothing to get too excited about? Are you kidding me?

Slater going for #10? Jordy and Dane entering year 3 and both primed for the top 10 or higher? Three time World Champ ANDY FREAKING IRONS back on the battlefield? Dusty Payne and Owen Wright in the mix? Parko off the Rock at Snapper and right into the fray once again? Sunny Garcia frothing on the QS?

And you just know the tour is bound to have great waves for a change. Tahiti is due for some carnage and Pipe is due for 12 foot Lefts.

I am frothed up and ready to go! Elwood you can meet me in the lot on the first real South in March to compare notes.

Dave Mailman

I like Mark’s positive attitude and outlook on next year’s tour. Good thing I’m not the only one around to fly the ASP flag whilst boring you all to death with arguments, apologies, facts and figures. I’m not going to do that here either. Just wanted to say that many people at the ASP (Brody and myself included) read and take to heart the constructive criticism and suggestions to improve the tour put out there by commenters like Mike, Elwood and that kid Josh on ASL. A lot of Mike’s ideas especially are great. Including his tour concept and the above idea for a kind of ASP Championship Final at Pipe with only guys still in the race for the title (Top 16 has been floated within ASP). All I can say is even if key people are listening, there are a lot of issues to be addressed and that takes time. Although it may or may not be a good thing, the ASP system is about EVOLUTION not REVOLUTION. Please be patient. Changes will come… just not as fast as all of us would like.

Happy Holidays!

Dave Mailman

PS: Nug, your Top 5 list for 2009 and the ensuing comments almost felt like the good ol’ days on some other site where we used to hang out and throw shit at the walls…

23 12 2009
trauzersnake

@Mark-

Any way you can narrow it down a little bit? I’m stumped. Is there a pub attached to that parking lot on the break? Or is it just a lot. And geez, all the way from trestles down to the mexican border is pretty hallowed ground at one point or another.

23 12 2009
trauzersnake

@Elwood-

I’ll try to CUM up with something soon.

23 12 2009
Elwood

@ Mark, Mailman, etc..

don’t get me wrong…. I’ll still be watching every contest…

23 12 2009
The Nug

I think it’s best to treat the ASP like we do our government. Some may treat it like a mother….as if she can never do wrong. I’d rather think of it like a brother. You’re proud of him and you love him, but when he starts acting like an asshole you aren’t afraid to sock him in the arm and tell him so.

23 12 2009
Mark

@Trauzersnake

Think about it. Where is there a legendary wave in San diego that is notorious for serious out of control raging in the lot which sits above an a-frame wave where the left runs down the line into a shorebreak?

Raquel Welch went to high school up the street. Come on Chris you are better then this.

23 12 2009
Jamon Bagel

@Mark,

Lost my wedding ring after getting blown up in that shorebreak on a whopper SW. It was on a chain around my neck. Snap. If you see, it let me know. It’s platinum, and round….like a bagel.

PS, Second wedding ring is in the Atlantic. Hmmmmmmm

23 12 2009
Jamon Bagel

@Mike

It occurred to me that you really don’t ever see Scott McClellan and Dave Mailman in the same place.

Hmmmmmmmmm.

23 12 2009
Scott McClellan

I, uh, um, can’t answer that charge. The policy, er procedures in place are designed to disseminate information that is timely and unconfidentialzed appropriately for your, ahh, well-being and journalistic intensity.

23 12 2009
Mike

I think Nug summed it up well, so let’s all punch Dave M in the arm once and call it a day… love ya Mailman…

As for Scott Mc Clellan, he’ll eventually turn on his puppet masters and we’ll all know the real truth although it may be conveyed in French.

23 12 2009
trauzersnake

@Mark-

Dude, I’ve been splitting hairs all day…I’m thinking cliff, and blacks has the glider port lot, but I don’t know about raging parties OR shorebreak. Seaside has a big lot right there, but its at sea level, and I’m not sure about epic there. Newbreak? Pipes? Oh yeah, and Raquel Welch is a little before my time, but she has an unreal rack in that caveman movie that makes me want to go rub one out right now. Still stumped though, and it dosen’t help that I hardly ever leave o’side anymore. Oh well, merry x-mas bro.

@Snake. I am old enough to know Raquel went to La Jolla high school, and back then we went off big time in those days. No AIDS and the authorties had no idea what we were up to.

Hey Bru did your buddy go anal with that cougar?

23 12 2009

@Jordy,

And we all know you’re Brodie Carr. Dude, drop the identities and get to work on fixing the ASPeeYu.

23 12 2009

Btw, my condolences to those who ran LikeBitchin. Unlike PostSurf, you died a slow, meaningless death.

23 12 2009

Blasphemy Rottmouth: Agreed, although PostSurf is still dithering around in a Terri Schaivo-esque death throes. With Dave Mailman playing the breathing tube, or possibly the colostomy bag.

23 12 2009
Blasphemy Rottmouth

Dave Mailman is performing cunnilingus on a bloated beluga carcass that washed out to sea three months ago and is yet to realize his lips have contracted the scurvy.

And yet, I cannot help but love the man as a father loves his prodigal son.

You know… the one with the helmet and breathing straw.

Boys,

It’s OK. I’ve left PostSurf for dead. Currently searching for more whale carcasses to tongue while preparing Christmas dinner for family and friends…

Happy Holidays!

Dave

24 12 2009
Mike

Perfect holiday greeting, courtesy of whale carcass tonguing… or Dave.

BR, Likebitchins death was much more merciful than Post Surf’s rotting corpse, but meanfingful? It did fill the gay niche, but you had to know that Chas would become bored by being a peripheral presence sooner or later.

As for Jordy, the fact that he is at Mark’s house is the first clue to Callibammies multiple personality disorder. That and Mark’s membership to the Jordy Anal Fan Club. Bucaneer seems to predate me, but I share his sentiment and one day when we all share a bonfire in Mark’s living room, I’ll break out my classic Tina Louise story for ya.

As for Marks bar, he so desperately wants to be included in the Wind and Sea crowd and his truck is filled with coldies to share. While he rambled on once about how great that reef is, I asked why he simply didn’t paddle across the deep spot and get tubed? That’s the difference between us in a nutshell…. he likes things soft and fat and I’m looking for holes.

Happy Gift Giving Day and Crass Commercialism Eve, Mike

PS @Lazer….. Because two intelligent people come to the same logical conclusion, it does not imply that either “lifted” the idea from each other. But if we can figure out a solution, you’d think those whose “careers’ rested on the organizations relevancy would concur.

I don’t own a truck.

And the only holes in your life are the ones where your sense of true friendship and hope for the future used to reside.

Sounds like Mark touched a nerve with Mike-Bucaneer-Voice of Reality.

I know it is Mike because Mark told me the other day that he told Mike on the phone that he got decent Swami’s.

Now Bucaneer is making Swami’s jabs at Mark. Fuckin kook.
